But not Kerry Lewis, 78, and Phoebe Davis, 80, volunteer chefs and coordinators of a weekly soup kitchen at the First African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church at 54 MacDonough St. in Brooklyn. Together with a small volunteer staff, Lewis and Davis prepare and serve meals for more than 100 people from the Bed-Stuy area on Wednesdays. These ceaseless altruists don't just ladle soup into bowls. On any given week they might be basting chicken or turkey wings, boiling heaps of spaghetti or rinsing cabbages until it's certain that everyone will get a share. They have worked side by side for 13 years and have no desire to hog the limelight. "I will only take credit for the kitchen if Phoebe and I take it together," insists Lewis.
