THIRD ANNUAL BED STUY ALIVE! TASTE, STRUT, TOUR, KNOW
Festive Celebration Honoring Brooklyn’s Culturally Enriched Neighborhood
Village Wide Affair Encourages Economic Empowerment & Community Pride

In the spirit of Kwanza principle Ujaama (cooperative economics), Community Board 3 in association with the Brownstoners of Bedford Stuyvesant Inc., Bedford Stuyvesant Artists’ Association (BeSaa), Bridge Street Development Corporation and Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation encourages New York to support the 3rd Annual Bed Stuy Alive! Taste, Strut, Tour Know. This festive event, which runs from Saturday, October 13 – Saturday, October 20, celebrates Bedford Stuyvesant’s vibrant business, cultural and artistic communities while promoting pride among its residents.

Bed Stuy Alive! Taste, Strut, Tour Know swings into gear Thursday, October 11. The outdoor food tasting and awards ceremony will take place in Restoration Plaza (1368 Fulton Street) reception tent. This neighborhood celebration, which is open to the public, includes sampling from participating “Taste” restaurants and a special awards presentation commemorating some of Bedford Stuyvesant’s community legends. This year’s honorees are Elsie Richardson, Alma Carroll, Erma Winslow, Vernell Albury, Mary Von King, Janie Green, Madgien Ford and Ruby Brent-Ford (posthumously).

Starting on Saturday, October 13, Bed Stuy truly comes alive as the Bed Stuy Alive! committee highlights some of the areas unique and growing dining facilities which includes a variety of gourmet, vegetarian, southern, African and West Indian eateries as well as bake goods and deserts. Each night a different “Taste” restaurant will host an event where an elected official will commend a community leader with a special award and citation. Each event will include mouth watering dishes from a specially priced “Taste” menu live entertainment and great artwork. This years honorees are Sam Pinn, Community Activist; Roger Wareham, The People’s Attorney; Brenda Fryson, Co Founder of The Brownstoners of Bedford Stuyvesant, Inc.; Ulysses Kilgore, CEO of Bedford- Stuyvesant Family Health Center; Rev. Robert M. Waterman, Pastor, Antioch Baptist Church; Marilyn Reid, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; and Sharonnie Perry, Community Activist.

On Saturday, October 13, and Sunday October 15, The Bedford-Stuyvesant Artists Association (BeSAA) celebrates its 4th annual Studio strut honoring Bed Stuy’s culturally enriched artistic community. Various creations from a variety of the community’s visual artists will be on display at various neighborhood outlets including local area churches, restaurants, shops and local galleries.

Sponsored by Forest City Ratner Companies, Keyspan, Metro NY, The Positive Community, Independent Foundation, and Pfizer the eight day extravaganza is designed to showcase Bed Stuy’s vibrant shops, eateries, and sights by exposing local residents, friends and the general public to the neighborhood’s majestic brownstones; culturally enriched visual arts community; prestigious landmarks and appetizing restaurants.

Event: Bed Stuy Alive! Taste, Strut, Tour, Know Kick Off & Award Ceremony
Description: The opening ceremony for the Annual Bed Stuy Alive! Taste, Strut, Tour, Know Award Ceremony will take place outdoors inside Restoration Plaza’s tented reception hall. Local elected officials will help kick off this affair by honoring neighborhood leaders. Event to includes food samplings from participating “taste” restaurants and displayed art work from participating “strut” artist.

Description: This spectacular house tour gives spectators a sneak peak into some of New York’s most stylish Brownstone homes that capture the timeless beauty and elegance of Bed Stuy living. The tour also includes Homeownership Workshop and the annual Bed Stuy Bazaar which takes place at Old Boys High School, 832 Marcy Avenue.
