NEW YORK - Nine New York City low-income families are getting the gift of green, affordable homes this holiday season. Habitat for Humanity is building the homes in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn using energy-efficient material. The material, called Insulated Concrete Forms, look like coffee cups and stack like building blocks. Concrete is then poured into the forms, creating airtight walls.
The nine families have contributed 300 hours of "sweat equity" per adult to the construction of the homes on Halsey Street and Marcus Garvey Boulevard. The homes are expected to be move-in ready by 2008.
