Nadonnia Rodriques finishes the 400-meter dash in 52.83 seconds.
Boys & Girls sprinter Nadonnia Rodriques had quite the outing at the Hall of Fame Classic at the Armory on Saturday.
The senior set the state record in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 52.83 seconds. The time was the fastest among U.S. high school girls this season and fourth-fastest high school time ever recorded.
"I've had a host of middle-distance runners, but she (Rodriques) is one of the special sprinters I have coached," said coach James Jackson, who is in his 30th season at the helm of the Bedford-Stuyvesant school's track program. "That record was her best," he added. "I've had her since she was a freshman, and she has really improved."
Jackson noted that Rodriques also clocked the nation's second-fastest 600-meter run with her 1:30.08, and that she has already visited TCU and South Carolina; she plans on wrapping up her college tour at LSU, the coach said.
First, though, she'll go to the city indoor championships, slated for this Friday at the Armory (9: 30 a.m.) - an apt stage for Rodriques to strut her stuff. Later, she'll run in the National Scholastic Indoor champion-ships, on March 14-16 at the Armory.
"We just haven't focused on setting records," Jackson said. "She's trying to run fast ... and she's doing it."
