CITY COUNCILMAN AL VANN & BROWNSTONERS OF BEDFORD STUYVESANT
SALUTE COMMUNITY EDUCATORS FOR A JOB WELL DONE

On Thursday, January 31, New York City Councilman Albert Vann & the Brownstoners of Bedford Stuyvesant hosted a special "Community Celebration Honoring Our Public Schools." The festive program, which saluted public school educators for their outstanding test performance and academic achievement this year, took place at PS 262, El Hajj Malik Shabazz School in Bedford Stuyvesant.

"Whenever the elders went to assess the well-being of the village, their first question was always 'and how are the children'," the program read. "Tonight, the village gathers to honor some of the school families who have demonstrated their commitment to our children.”

Co-sponsored by US Congressman Ed Townes; NY State Senators Velmanette Montgomery & Eric Adams; US Assemblywoman, Anette Robinson; NY Assemblymen, Hakim Jeffries & Karim Camara, included an opening reception and live instrumental performance by student musicians from the Noel Pointer Foundation.

After greetings from hosting Principal, Joletha Ferguson and a powerful spirit filled convocation by Rev. Robert Townsley, Pastor of St. Mathew Missionary Baptist Church; NY City Councilman All Vann gave words of encouragement during his special salute to attending educators. The brightest highlight of the evening was the salute to the Bedford Academy. Under Principal George Leonard charge, the school scored 100 on the progress report.

Honors also went out to the following school for their outstanding performance resulting in A grade. They are: Principal Michele Ashley, PS 26 – Jesse Owens School; Principal Cheryl Ault, PS 81 – Thaddeus Steven School; Principal Yvonne Wright, PS 93 – Wiliam H. Prescott School; Principal Joletha Ferguson, PS 262 – El Hajj Malik Shabazz School; Principal Kourtney Boyd-Cole, The Urban Assembly School for Urban Environment; and Principal Glyn Marryshow, MS 385 – School for Business, Finance & Entrepreneurship

Those receiving honors for B Grades included Principal Carol Walcott, PS 25 – The Eubie Blake School; Principal Valerie Taylor, PS 44, Marcus Garvey School; Principal Karen Hambright, PS 243, Weeksville School; Principal Dennis Jeffers, PS 289 – George V. Brower School; Principal Dr. Julia Mortley, PS 305- Dr. Peter Ray School; Principal Dr. Gail Bell-Baptiste, PS 308 – Clara Cardwell School; Principal Jacklyn Charles-Marcus, MS 35 – Stephen Decatur School; Principal Kenyatte Reid, MS 103 – Satellite Three Academy;
