It's too late for Nixzmary Brown, but some Brooklyn residents are making sure other kids don't suffer her fate by learning how to spot child abuse.
"Nixzmary Brown was not the only victim. There are many others," said the Rev. Daran Mitchell, whose First AME Zion Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant is hosting a three-part workshop called the Brooklyn Child Watch Program.
"Many other cases go undetected and unreported that fall under the radar," Mitchell said. "We're trying to save kids before it's too late."
The program, co-created by The New York Foundling child protection organization and the office of Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes, had its first session Thursday night and featured a workshop on spotting signs of child abuse.
The other two sessions are April 10 and April 17. All are open to the public at the 54 McDonough St. church.
"The key for us is to educate, train and talk to folks, in a very practical way, about the signs and consequences of child abuse," said Bill Baccaglini, executive director of The New York Foundling. "Once you show the consequences of nonaction...people are much more likely to get involved."
