FreshDirect deliveries coming to 2 new Brooklyn 'hoods

It took six years, but FreshDirect delivery trucks have a few new destinations - Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights.
The Internet supermarket popular with residents of wealthy neighborhoods like the upper East and West sides and Brooklyn Heights is expanding to the heart of Brooklyn.
"We have a strong demand here," said Jim Moore, FreshDirect vice president of business affairs, attributing it to the growing use of the Internet.
"I'm sure that part of it is that people who have used us in [Manhattan] moved out here, but it may also be that people are more health-conscious and there are not a lot of healthy options here."
Longtime resident Dorothy Harris, 64, was glad she can stop depending on her son for rides to the supermarket, but she didn't buy Moore's excuse for the delay in service expansions.
"The neighborhood is changing. There's a lot of white people coming in the area," said Harris, who is black and lives in the Marcy Houses.
"Because it was just us here before, they didn't care," she said.
Mazhar Al-Hadid could barely contain his excitement when he got an e-mail from the company three weeks ago saying they would be delivering to Bed-Stuy.
"I was thrilled," he said, clutching two boxes with edamame, eggs and speciality chocolates."
