Bergtraum follows an offensive and defensive scheme that is akin to a three-ring circus - players press and trap and push the ball at a breakneck pace - and Krystal (Grandma) Parnell, a 5-5 senior, was brilliant in the role of ringmaster/point guard this season.
The senior from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, averaged 7.8 points and 4.1 assists per game and was a lockdown defender as well as a tenacious competitor. Her productivity increased when the opposition was stronger; she raised her averages to 15 points and 6 assists while piloting the Blazers to their 10th straight PSAL crown. She was the best player on the court in the PSAL final against Manhattan Center, when she tallied 19 points and handed out 10 assists. Parnell later led the Lady Blazers to another state Federation 'AA' title.
Parnell has had a bevy of offers from Division I colleges but has yet to decide where she'll play the next four years. It is rare for a player of Parnell's caliber to remain uncommitted this late into her senior year; Parnell's determination to choose the school that is best for her is an example of her patient nature.
For her on-court consistency and rock-solid leadership, Parnell is the Daily News Player of the Year.
"She's definitely a big-game player," said Ed Grezinsky, her coach at Bergtraum. "You have to look at what the kid averages in the big games. It worked out that way in big games, she stepped up, she took over. Her stock went up this year."
Other nominees: Nicole Capurso (St. John Villa), Alicia Cropper (Jefferson), China Crosby (Manhattan Center), Bria Smith (Christ the King), Kerri White (Molloy)
