CB3’S CHAIR BRENDA FRYSON STEPS DOWN
By Keith L. Forest

On Monday, June 2, Community Board Three (3) extraordinary Chairwoman, Brenda Fryson announced that she will not be seeking another term and will be stepping down from her post to spend more time with her family. Ms. Fryson, who took over the chairmanship September 2007, dedication and commitment to the Bedford Stuyvesant Community, was un-matched. “She truly raised the bar as a leader and voice for Community Board Three’s residence,” stated Councilman Al Vann who presented the chairwoman with a bouquet of flowers. Second Chair, Tohma Faulkner lead the attending audience in a standing ovation in honor of Ms. Fryson’s leadership while personally thanking her for being a mentor and friend.

In her devoted efforts in keeping residents of the community involved and informed, Ms. Fryson launched several initiatives such as compiling and mailing off a monthly news letter; providing monthly progress reports on issues and project of concern; while presenting cultural performances during the monthly meetings. A born leader, the former educator raised attendance and moral while constantly encouraging and motivating residence to have an active voice in “our” community.”

CB3 also welcomed its new board members who will be officially sworn in later this month at a formal ceremony at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall.

Agenda items for the closing session included Finance Secretary, Henry Butler’s update on the Capital and Expense Budget. According to Mr. Henry, Mayor Bloomberg’s recent budget cuts pushed funding for the Bedford Stuyvesant Sanitation Garage to be moved from the 2009 budget to 2012. Although City Council members Al Vann and Leticia James forwarded personal letters to House Speaker Christina Quinn in protest of the cut, Mr. Butler strongly urged attending residence to do the same.

According to Councilman Vann, the safety and prosperity of Bedford Stuyvesant is at risk as gun and gang violence continue to plague are streets. On behalf of the Bed Stuy Safety Council Mr. Vann strongly feel that Bedford Stuyvesant can achieve and must demand a crime free community and urged the community to support the organization’s efforts in achieving its goal. Mr. Vann thanked our local police for their efforts in making our street safer. However, he insisted that the community continue putting pressure on not only them but ourselves to do more. “We have countless resources in our community that continue to go unused,” stated Councilman Vann urging residence to tap into these resources in an effort to make the impossible possible and demand a crime free community.
