Festive Celebration Honoring Brooklyn’s Culturally Enriched Neighborhood
Village Wide Affair Encourages Economic Empowerment & Community Pride
Brooklyn NY (August 20, 2008) - In the spirit of the Kwanza principle Ujaama (cooperative economics), Bedford Stuyvesant Artists’ Association (BeSAA); Bridge Street Development Corporation, The Brownstoners of Bedford Stuyvesant, Inc.; Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, and Community Board 3 encourages New York to support its 4th annual Bed Stuy Alive! Taste, Strut, Tour, Shop, Rock, and Run festival. This celebratory collaborative effort running Saturday, October 11 – Saturday, October 18, pays tribute to Bedford Stuyvesant’s vibrant businesses, cultural heritage, entrepreneurial and artistic spirit while promoting pride among its residents.
Bed Stuy Alive! Taste, Strut, Tour, Shop, Rock, Run event kicks off Saturday, October 11, with an outdoor street festival complete with live entertainment, open vendor’s market, exhibit booths and much more. These activities take place from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM along the Fulton Street corridor between New York and Kingston Avenues. This free neighborhood celebration, which is open to the public, will include sampling from participating “Taste” restaurants, informational and exhibit booths and much more. There will also be various cultural performances from local schools and community organizations and a special live concert featuring some of Brooklyn’s hippest, hottest and funkiest bands. Sponsored by Restoration Rock, patrons can “Rock” to the pulsating sounds of live rock bands and other emerging talent.
In addition to great entertainment, this free outdoor neighborhood celebration will include an awards presentation commemorating some of Bedford Stuyvesant’s community legends. This year’s honorees are Jerry Backshear, Margaret Cobbs, Spring McCLendon, Ophelia Perry and Valerie Bell-Bey.
There will also be a posthumous presentation honoring Bed Stuy Alive! founder Tohma Yvonne Faulkner. This award will pay homage to Ms. Faulkner’s unswerving commitment, dedication and service to the people and places of her beloved Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood and will be presented annually to an individual that truly embrace Ms. Faulkner’s profound commitment to serve and not be served.
No need to travel to Manhattan to shop, when Bed Stuy has everything you need within walking distance. In celebration of its 4th Annual affair, Bed Stuy Alive! is joining forces with local merchants in presenting the ultimate shopping experience. Participants will have a golden opportunity to pick up the latest fashions from numerous boutiques and shops; indulge in a day of pampering at a variety of neighborhood spas; or discover the perfect gift at a variety of specialty shops and much more. Offers and discounts vary according to shop owner’s discretion and offered exclusively during the Bed Stuy Alive time line.
In addition to the abundant shopping and entertainment opportunities, on Saturday, October 11, and Sunday October 12, the Bedford-Stuyvesant Artists’ Association (BeSAA) will host its 5th Annual Studio Strut. This festive community affair honors Bed Stuy’s culturally rich artistic talent by inviting patrons to explore Bed Stuy’s various art galleries and growing creative community. Participating galleries and venues include: Zion Gallery at 152 MacDonough Street; Afro Art Designs, 3126 Stuyvesant Avenue; Skylight Gallery at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza, 1368 Fulton Street; George Washington Carver Gallery, 677 Lafayette Street; Stephan Davis Gallery, 152 MacDonough Street, 3rd Floor; and Leroy’s Framing and Gift Shop, 1549 B Fulton Street. A healthy community is a happy community and Bed Stuy Alive! encourages runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages to join them for Restoration Plaza’s annual 10K Run & Fun Walk. This healthy excursion, which takes place Sunday, October 12, is for people of all fitness levels travels along a scenic picturesque route through historic Brooklyn.
