November 29, 2006 -- A man who'd been smothered and set on fire in a vacant Brooklyn apartment was identified yesterday as a 21-year-old construction worker, police said.
The charred body of Earl Obermuller, was discovered after the FDNY extinguished a blaze inside a basement apartment on Madison Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant just before 11 p.m. Monday.
The Brownsville man, a Guyanese immigrant, was found duct-taped to a chair. He died from asphyxia because the tape was stretched over his mouth, authorities said.
Police sources said he was most likely dead before his body was set ablaze.
