CITY OVERALL MURDER RATE FALLS WHILE
BED STUY & SURROUNDING NEIGHBORS CLIMB

New York City is holding its breath anticipating to record a murder rate below 500. However, statistic are showing an overall 10.6% increase in homicide in Brooklyn North, which comprises Bedford Stuyvesant, Brownsville, East New York, Crown Heights, Bushwick, Fort Greene, Williamsburg and Greenpoint. NYPD overall count in this area as of Sunday, November 18, was 125 up from last year’s count of 113.

New York City is safer than ever: Murders in the city is expected to fall below the 500 for the first time since reliable homicide numbers were first tallied, As of Sunday, November 18, NYPD has recorded only 428 murders. At the current rate, the city should expect to register about 485 homicides, or 1.3 per day.

The murder tally hit an all-time high of 2,245 in 1990 before falling drastically in the past 15 years. There have been fewer than 600 murders each year in the city since 2002. If this year's pace holds, the city would record the lowest number of murders since reliable records were first kept by the NYPD in the early 1960s.
