31ST ANNUAL HARLEM TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY
On Thursday, December 13 the village of Harlem kicked of the holiday season with its annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and outdoors concert. iggins Gospel for Teens Choir, Yakar Roots & Rhythms Drum & Dance Ensemble, Impact Repertory Theatre and others. The Yule tide event took place at 6:00 PM, in the plaza area of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building, 163 West 125th Street at the corner of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd. In addition to performers and surprise guests, the ceremony will include special greetings from local community leaders and elected officials.
The history of the Harlem Tree Lighting ceremony dates back to 1976 when a group of prominent Harlemites decided to celebrate their beloved community with a ceremonial festival similar to the Rockefeller Plaza event. In 1978, with the assistance of New York State Office of General Services, Con Edison and 369th Army National Guards, the first tree was placed in front of Adam Clayton State Office Building. Nearly 30 years later, with corporate and community support, the tradition lives on.

where he made a name for himself covering hurricane Bertha and Fran in 1996. Over the past few years, the Emmy award nominated weatherman has been a prominent supporter of numerous charitable organizations and for the last five years has served as the official host for the Harlem Tree Lighting ceremony.
